Angela Ryder

Angela Ryder’s tree-speak range of jewellery acknowledges the boab tree, its shadow, its beauty, its strength… Handcut from a sacred rectangle ratio of gold or silver, strung on prayer beads of wood and seed, and engraved with poetic words of spirit and nature her trees speak for themselves. The tree as a temple, the tree as ephemeral, the tree as interconnection…the tree as only for a moment only… Ange has recently made wooden and silver prayer bracelets and earrings, beautiful in their simplicity honouring the speckled lotus seed, the rich warmth of bodhi seeds, the fragrant calm of sandalwood, and the purity of silver…bringing peace to all those who wear them…

Each collection of jewels I make is based upon nature…there is indeed some kind of spirit that rolls through all things, some fearsome memory in stones, in wind, in the lives of birds… and I would say… in trees – evident in the boab trees of my tree-speak range.

For me, the boab tree or bottle tree is a place of contemplation and a place for people to gather and feel sheltered, and connect to one another.  The words I engrave echo this philosophy. The trees are strung on seeds from Buddhist prayer beads to illuminate the symbol of the tree as temple; and a single silver bead is incorporated to remind us of the difference an individual’s (kindness) can make, to the whole.
