Julie’s paintings and works on paper are inspired in large part by the UK 1950′s children’s books, boy’s own manuals and early reader Janet and John ladybird books. She vividly recreates the hand knitted sweater wearing children with their buckle shoes and game playing adding quirky touches that allude to another element of her story telling. This might include naked women clasping french poodles and beckoning admirers to venture closer; or it may be poking fun at the brylcreem, clean shaven men who were used widely in 1950′s advertisements. Her repertoire also covers circus scenes, windswept big top tents, macabre forests and scenery that is just a little surreal.
