Melissa Gillespie

Melissa Gillespie is an Adelaide based Contemporary Jeweller.  In 2004 she completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Jewellery and Metal) at the South Australian School of Art, University of South Australia.  During 2005 – 2006 Melissa designed and manufactured her own range of jewellery at Adelaide’s most prestigious design studio Gray Street Workshop. Her  jewellery conveys the idea of wrapping and binding organic objects using textural materials such as cotton thread, string, wool and silk.  Inspired by the fragile elements of nature Melissa enjoys wrapping twigs, leaves, grass shoots and other natural objects that have an unusual shape or texture.  Through the intricate and repetitive process and delicate manipulation of these materials, Melissa is able to convey a nurturing quality in her artwork that enhances the natural beauty her objects rough, rigid form.
